ChatGPT outage: Popular AI chatbot down for users globally; OpenAI shares major update says, ‘working to…’

ChatGPT, the popular AI chatbot, has gone down globally, leaving millions of users unable to access its services. The outage, which began around 7 PM ET (5:30 am IST), has also affected OpenAI’s API and Sora services. Users attempting to log in are being met with a message stating that “ChatGPT is currently unavailable”. However, OpenAI has assured that the issue has been identified and a fix is being worked on.

In a statement on X, OpenAI apologized for the inconvenience and promised to keep users updated on the status of the outage. This is the second major outage in recent days, following a disruption to Meta’s platforms, including WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook, which affected thousands of users worldwide.

The ChatGPT outage has caused widespread disruption, with users taking to social media to express their frustration and disappointment. OpenAI is working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible, but no timeline has been given for when the service is expected to be restored.

Last month, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had apologized on X after ChatGPT went down for 30 minutes. As per outage tracking website Downdetector, over 19,000 people were impacted due to the unavailability of chatbot. In a post on X admitting the outage, Altman had said the company was much better at reliability than it used to be but there is still a lot more work to do.

Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp down

Thousands of users in the US experienced disruptions on Meta’s Facebook and Instagram earlier today, with over 27,000 reports of issues on Facebook and more than 28,000 on Instagram. The outage began around 12:50 p.m. ET.

Additionally, WhatsApp, Meta’s messaging app, was also affected, with over 1,000 users reporting issues, according to Downdetector.com.

This is not the first time Meta’s platforms have experienced a major outage. Earlier this year, a technical glitch caused a widespread disruption that affected hundreds of thousands of Facebook and Instagram users worldwide for over two hours.
