Vikram Doraiswami Appointed India’s New Ambassador to China

India has appointed senior diplomat Vikram K. Doraiswami as its next Ambassador to China, marking a significant development in the country’s diplomatic engagement with Beijing. The announcement was made by the Ministry of External Affairs on March 19, 2026.

Doraiswami, a 1992-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, is currently serving as India’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. He is expected to take up his new assignment in Beijing shortly.

He will succeed Pradeep Kumar Rawat, who has been serving as India’s envoy to China since 2022.

Experienced Diplomat with Global Exposure

Doraiswami brings extensive diplomatic experience, having served in key roles across multiple countries. Over the years, he has held ambassadorial positions in Uzbekistan and South Korea, and later served as High Commissioner to Bangladesh before taking charge in the United Kingdom.

He has also held important positions within the Ministry of External Affairs, including roles related to international organizations, regional cooperation, and Indo-Pacific affairs.

Strategic Importance of the Appointment

His appointment comes at a crucial time in India-China relations, as both countries continue efforts to stabilize ties following years of tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

With his prior experience and understanding of regional dynamics, Doraiswami is expected to play a key role in managing diplomatic relations and advancing dialogue between the two nations.

Looking Ahead

As India navigates complex geopolitical challenges in the region, the appointment of an experienced envoy like Doraiswami underscores the government’s focus on strengthening diplomatic channels with China while safeguarding national interests.
