Assam Polls: Congress and Raijor Dal Seal Alliance as Gaurav Gogoi, Akhil Gogoi Join Hands

A renewed political alliance has taken shape in Assam, as the Indian National Congress and Raijor Dal announced a seat-sharing agreement for the upcoming Assembly elections.

The announcement was made jointly by Gaurav Gogoi and Akhil Gogoi, signaling a major turnaround after earlier alliance talks had collapsed.

Alliance Back on Track

After weeks of uncertainty, both parties confirmed they will contest together:

  • Raijor Dal will contest 13 seats
  • Two constituencies will see friendly contests with Congress
  • Remaining seats have been allocated as part of the agreement

Akhil Gogoi also declared that his party would work towards making Gaurav Gogoi the next Chief Minister of Assam.

Key Constituencies and Adjustments

The agreement includes several important seats:

  • Dhing, previously a point of disagreement
  • Sivasagar, where Akhil Gogoi will contest
  • Margherita, where a Congress candidate withdrew

The compromise came after Raijor Dal reduced its initial demand for more seats.

Congress Expands Candidate List

With its latest list, Congress has now announced candidates for over 100 seats in the 126-member Assembly.

Seat-sharing within the alliance includes:

  • Assam Jatiya Parishad
  • CPI(M)
  • Regional allies

This reflects a broader strategy to consolidate opposition votes.

Political Landscape in Assam

The election is shaping up as a multi-cornered contest:

  • The ruling alliance is led by the BJP and its partners
  • Opposition parties are forming alliances to challenge them
  • Some regional parties are contesting independently

This makes the election highly competitive.
