Meta is not shutting down its virtual reality metaverse just yet. Despite earlier plans to discontinue the VR version of Horizon Worlds, the company has decided to keep it running — at least for the foreseeable future.
VR Shutdown Reversed (Partially)
Meta had initially announced that it would shut down the VR version of Horizon Worlds by mid-2026 and shift its focus entirely to mobile. However, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth recently clarified that the VR experience will remain available following strong feedback from dedicated users.
While this decision keeps the platform alive, it comes with limitations:
- No new VR games or features will be developed
- Existing VR worlds will continue to function
- The app will remain available for download
Mobile Takes Priority
Even with VR support continuing, Meta is clearly pivoting toward mobile. According to Bosworth, most user engagement and creator activity already happens on mobile devices, making it the company’s primary focus going forward.
This shift reflects a broader strategy change:
- Expanding reach beyond expensive VR headsets
- Competing with platforms like Roblox and Fortnite
- Prioritizing accessibility and scale
A Struggling Metaverse Vision
Meta’s metaverse ambitions have faced multiple setbacks in recent months:
- Layoffs within the Reality Labs division
- Closure of several VR studios
- Cancellation of some VR projects
- Declining user traction in Horizon Worlds
Despite billions invested, Horizon Worlds has struggled to gain mainstream adoption, raising questions about the long-term viability of VR-first social platforms.
Redefining the “Metaverse”
Interestingly, Meta is also redefining what the “metaverse” means. Bosworth suggested that it’s no longer limited to immersive VR environments but includes digital interactions across devices — even everyday smartphone usage.
This broader interpretation signals a shift away from the original VR-heavy vision toward a more flexible, cross-platform ecosystem.
