The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced its first list of 88 candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections scheduled for April 9, 2026, signaling the start of its full-scale election campaign in the state.
Among the key highlights of the list is the inclusion of former Congress leader Pradyut Bordoloi, who will contest from the Dispur constituency. Bordoloi recently joined the BJP, marking a significant political shift ahead of the elections.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has once again been fielded from his traditional stronghold, Jalukbari, where he is aiming for another consecutive victory.
The candidate list also reflects the party’s broader strategy of bringing in leaders from opposition parties. Bordoloi’s induction and immediate nomination underline BJP’s efforts to strengthen its position in key constituencies.
However, the party has held back the announcement for at least one constituency—Sissiborgaon—indicating that further candidate lists are expected soon.
The release of the first list comes at a crucial time, as political activity intensifies in Assam ahead of the elections. The BJP, which led the state government in the previous term, appears to be focusing on continuity in leadership along with strategic new inclusions to maintain its dominance.
With opposition parties also gearing up and candidate lists being rolled out, the Assam Assembly elections are shaping up to be a closely watched political contest in 2026.
