Giving reprieve to over 1.2 billion mobile customers, the Telecom Regulatory of India (TRAI) is all set to tackle the issue of fake calls which a customer faces on a regular basis. The regulator has made important changes in the commercial communication segment and it will help mobile users to handle the fake calls.
A new Do-Not-Disturb App will be introduced soon and it will give the mobile users the right to block all unwanted, fake calls and messages.
It is being observed that incidents of fake calls have surged and in wake of these fake and fraudulent calls, TRAI stepped in and decided to provide a new App next year to consumers. The regulator has asked all stakeholders to analyse technical feasibility of adding AI features in their services into DND App with a planned launch.
Since the launch of AI filters by the telecom companies, over 800 entities and 1.8 million mobile numbers have been blocked. TRAI has decided that it is necessary to upgrade the DND App as the telecom companies are also facing challenges in combating these fake calls using AI filters at the network level. TRAI is of the view that blocking features at the user level are an important aspect.
The upgraded version of DND App will offer users a better experience in handling commercial communication preferences. At present, mobile users can only report spam calls. The new App will limit the unwanted commercial calls.
The previous DND app was launched in 2016 but it failed to get recognition by the mobile users. Now, TRAI is hoping that the new tool will become popular among users. It has also made changes in its policies related to combat fake calls.
