Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel acted independently in its recent strike on an Iranian gas field, as tensions escalate across the region following attacks on critical energy infrastructure.
The strike targeted Iran’s South Pars gas field, part of the world’s largest natural gas reserve. In response, Iran launched retaliatory attacks, including strikes on energy facilities in the Gulf and an industrial complex in Qatar.
Rising Tensions and Conflicting Signals
The developments have raised concerns about coordination between Israel and the United States.
- US President Donald Trump said he was not informed in advance of the attack
- However, reports suggested some Israeli officials claimed prior coordination with the US
- Netanyahu denied misleading Washington or dragging it into the conflict
At a press conference, Netanyahu added that Trump had requested no further attacks on energy infrastructure.
Energy Infrastructure Becomes Key Battleground
The conflict has increasingly targeted energy assets:
- Iran struck Qatar’s Ras Laffan industrial area, home to the world’s largest LNG processing facility
- Iran also moved to restrict shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil route
- Israel reported damage to an oil refinery in Haifa following Iranian missile strikes
QatarEnergy said around 17% of its export capacity could be affected.
Global Energy Impact
The escalation has triggered significant volatility in energy markets:
- Gas prices surged sharply following the attacks
- UK benchmark prices briefly spiked before stabilizing
- European energy prices rose by over 10%
Qatar’s Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdurrahman Al-Thani warned of serious consequences for global energy supplies, calling the situation a “dangerous escalation.”
Iran’s Warning and Ongoing Conflict
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that Tehran would show “zero restraint” if further attacks occur.
Meanwhile, the US is reportedly considering easing some sanctions on Iranian oil to stabilize global markets.
Israel’s Position
Netanyahu emphasized that Israel is:
- Inflicting major damage on Iran’s military capabilities
- Targeting strategic assets, including naval operations
- Seeking to weaken Iran’s regime
However, he stated that any regime change would ultimately depend on the Iranian people.
