Ratan Tata dies: You won’t believe what Ratan Tata said on AI 7 years ago

New Delhi: 86-year-old Ratan Tata, the esteemed chairman emeritus of the Tata Group, passed away last night at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. Beyond being one of India’s most iconic industrialists and prominent business leaders, Tata was a forward-thinking visionary. In his later years, he actively championed the importance of understanding the potential impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) on the future of work, raising awareness about the profound changes it could bring to industries and society.

“Technology is going to decide how businesses are run,” Tata once remarked in a Tata Group publication. He recognized that while automation had already been a key driver of industrial growth, the emergence of Artificial intelligence(AI) would accelerate these shifts even more. Tata stressed the importance for companies, including those within the Tata Group, to continuously evolve and adapt to stay relevant in this new era of intelligent technology.

During Ratan Tata’s leadership, the Tata Group embraced AI and robotics, championing innovation across its businesses. His visionary approach led to the creation of groundbreaking products like TAL Manufacturing Solutions’ Brabo robot, designed to cater to smaller industries such as auto component manufacturing and end-of-line inspections. Additionally, Tata Capital, the group’s financial arm, introduced AI-based chatbots to enhance customer engagement.

While Tata was a strong advocate for technological advancement, he remained mindful of its impact on people. He frequently voiced concerns about the potential disruption AI could cause to jobs and the shifting role of human skills in an increasingly automated world.

Ratan Tata stepped down as Chairman of Tata Sons after 50 years with the Tata group and was appointed Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons.
